Contemporary Visual Arts Practitioner & Researcher
Gail Flockhart

Researcher Profile
My practice is located at the intersection of contemporary art and rigorous research methodology. By exploring the traces of trauma and residues of memory, I seeks ways to bridge the gap between scholarly inquiry and the visceral reality of lived traumatic experience through contemporary art. This body of work investigates how materiality and perception shape our understanding of trauma-informed art practice in the 21st century.
theory
Posthuman & New Materialist
Critical reflections on how images function as knowledge and the impact of visual narratives.

Core Theme
Trauma, Memory & Affect
This project is influenced by my subjective experience of traumatic events in early childhood. These experiences have left a 'psychic wound', trail of fragments and unprocessed images that repeatedly and relentlessly return. My work therefore seeks to unhide these affective residues and make them 'matter' through my art.
Exploring the boundaries of contemporary practice through rigorous but speculative investigation and creative experimentation.
Research Themes & Elements
Media
Multi-Media
I use lens-based, photographic and moving-image media, alongside audio/sound, textiles, found objects and ephemera, sculptural forms and installation works.
Core Theme
Trauma
Investigating the tension between tactile substrates and digital ephemeralism in contemporary archives.
OTHER THEMES
Adverse Childhood Experiences
My research interest is primarily in how traumatic experiences in early childhood impact and effect the subjects sense of self - particularly where this concerns self-perception, body-image and body dysmorphias.
RESEARCH CONCERNS
Sense of Self, Subjectivity, Identity & Belonging
Investigating the tension ...
METHODOLOGY
Hybrid Diffractive
Critical reflections on how images function as knowledge and the impact of visual narratives.

key concepts
Entanglement, the Assemblage, Intra-action, Process
Critical concepts informing my doing-thinking-making, artistic practice, and written work, are drawn from Karen Barad's work, particularly 'Meeting the Universe Halfway', alongside some of the key ideas proposed by Donna Haraway, Deleuze and Gauttari and Erin Manning.
genres
Self-Re-Presentation, Performative Practice & Visual Narrative
My work is situated across several different genres and so is therefore more of a hybrid practice using myself and my body in modes of self-representation, or self-re-presentation. I adopt performative strategies for investigating what might be hidden beneath the superficial surface of the image; digging into the psyche to reveal insights into how the self is constructed/deconstructed and re-imagined.
APPROACHES
Speculative, Imaginative, Exploratory, Experimental, and Intuitive
My approach to making art has become far more fluid through the process of this research project. The work tends to 'evolve'; emerging through the process of engaging with media, material, images, thoughts, theory, and writing. These modalities feed into each other sparking new creative pathways for exploring.

Wayward Arts
We are a critically engaged group of artists originally formed by alumni from the University of Plymouth in order to maintain and strength artistic dialogues post graduation. We meet regularly to discuss topical arts-related themes, hold presentations of members practice works or creative projects, host invited guest speakers, organise trips to exhibitions and have an annual social event. We have undertaken several collaborative projects, including a hand-bound bookwork projet with contributions from nine participating artists, entitled 'being' exploring different modes of drawing.
